Using the power of telecommunications to transform education into a powerful 21st century
approach to learning is a goal of Project Chapleau. The approach to reach this goal is one
developed and offered through the non-profit educational organization Nortel LearniT.
Structured as an e-learning model it engages users to apply new technology skills to
applications that support, enhance and ultimately, transform, the learning process.
Nortel LearniT leverages the investments being made to equip Chapleau with the hardware and
software from which to engage in digital learning. Nortel LearniT provides the opportunity to
develop technology skills in an applied, learner-centric approach, which allows students to
create content that demonstrates their ability to apply the knowledge they gain and communicate
with 21st century tools.
Nortel LearniT's method begins with the preparation of Chapleaus' teachers and
trainers to effectively use technology for educational purposes. After their professional
development educators are provided with lesson plans and other training materials that embed
the use of technology through hands-on projects. Students then use their tech skills to
demonstrate their proficiency in the subject matter.
Nortel LearniT relies on "communities of learners" to support and enhance the
development of their 21st century skills. Through the use of the cutting edge online
collaborative tool, the Multimedia Communications Server or MCS, teachers and students can work
together, share resources and deliver distance education. In Project Chapleau the results of
this collaboration and application of technology based skill development are showcased by being
designated a Nortel LearniT Center.
