As the amount of data available on the Internet increases at an exponential rate, being able
to find what you want is increasingly important. Fortunately, there are many excellent search
engines available.
A search engine is a program that searches the Web for files or sites and provides you with
a list based on your keywords. No two search engines will produce the same results. Hence if
you do not find what you are looking for with one search engine you should try another. There
are numerous search engines.
Did you know...
There is a handy search bar on every page on the Chapleau Community Portal. It's located on the
top right hand corner, and you can set it to either search only this site, or the Internet via
Google.
General Search
- Windows Live Search You can search the web in general,
or focus on news articles or images. Formerly MSN Search.
- Google Search Allows you to search in all of the above,
plus newsgroups.
- Yahoo! Canada Yet another comprehensive search, with
news features on the front page.
- Ask.com Formerly Ask Jeeves, this engine has
some specialty searches available, such as the ability to search for information specifically
to famous people and movie titles.
Search for Places on Maps
- Google Local Very good road maps and satellite
imagery.
- Google Earth A downloadable program that allows you
to virtually explore the globe with high resolution satellite imagery.
- Windows Live Local Find places and businesses with
road maps and aerial photography.
Search in Blogs
Search for your friend's blogs (aka online diaries) on MySpace, Windows Live Spaces,
Blogger, LiveJournal, and more.
Search Engines Designed for Kids
It may be safer for children to use search engines designed for them as these search engines
automatically filter adult content, are more user friendly for children, and some even provide
search results only from sites that are geared towards children. Here is a list and description
of some commonly used search engines for children:
- Yahooligans Designed for children ages 7 to 12,
Yahooligans does not search the entire web but only a handpicked listing of sites for a match.
The advantage is adult material is less likely to appear but the disadvantage is the search may
be too limited and sites with good information may not be searched for a match. Yahooligan,
launched in 1996, is one of the oldest children's search engine and directory.
- KidsClick! Created and maintained by Librarians,
KidsClick is a search engine and directory of approximately 5000 websites.
- LookSmart LookSmart is the parent company of Net
Nanny, a company that provides internet software and services to block inappropriate material.
The LookSmart search engine uses Net Nanny software to filter results. The Kids Directory
contains over 20,000 children friendly websites that have been evaluated by LookSmart
editors.
