Welcome to the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve, the largest Crown Game Preserve in the World! With absolutely no hunting or trapping allowed, the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve offers some of the best opportunities for wildlife viewing. The only shooting that is done here is with a camera. Animals that are commonly seen within the game preserve are moose, black bears, wolves, lynx, red fox, martens, fishers, as well as aquatic animals such as beavers and river otters. While moose and black bears are regularly seen throughout the preserve, wolves and lynx may be a little trickier to spot. For the bird enthusiast, several species inhabit the preserve for various parts of the year. Some of the most exciting birds to spot are the birds of prey. These include the bald eagle, osprey, broad - winged hawk, and several species of owls. Aquatic birds, such as the Common Loon, Great Blue heron, and the very large Sand Hill Crane can also be spotted. A variety of duck species also reside in the several lakes, rivers and ponds of the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve. Almost everyone that enters the game preserve will see some type of animal in their natural habitat. It is important to never disturb or approach these magnificent wild animals. While wildlife can easily be seen from the road, the Chapleau Regional Development Corporation (CRDC) is working hard to enhance the wildlife viewing experience. In a partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, FedNor, and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, the CRDC is making the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve more tourist friendly. Several picnic areas, equipped with picnic tables and garbage cans, have been developed on scenic sites overlooking the water. Along with the picnic sites, there are also 4 wildlife viewing platforms, in which 3 were just built in 2005 by the CRDC. Two of these wildlife viewing platforms are intended for guided tours. All of the wildlife viewing platforms are located at sites which have a high potential for viewing wildlife, such as moose and black bear habitat. The three new wildlife viewing stations were built to provide the optimum wildlife viewing experience. A short trail leads you to the wildlife viewing platform which is hidden among the trees. When using these viewing stations, it is important to be patient and remain quite because you never know what will walk out of the bush at any given time. Just remember to bring your cameras and binoculars and please sign the log books in the wildlife viewing platform. All of the sites which have been established by the CRDC are marked with signs, so they can easily be found. Several of the sites are also equipped with interpretive signs to inform you on the history and various animals of the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve. The beautiful scenery alone makes the drive through the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve worthwhile. Actually seeing any wildlife is just a bonus! So take a few hours or even the day to explore Chapleau's backyard, the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve. For more information about the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve or for guided tours, please
