Welcome to our Community!
Chapleau Municipal Council
June 18, 2007
The Town of Chapleau is situated within the Boreal Forest and Arctic Watershed Region of
Northern Ontario. Long renowned for the excellent fishing and hunting opportunities that we
enjoy, Chapleau is also the Gateway to the largest Crown Game Preserve in the world. The
Preserve, established in 1925, is 700,000 hectares in size, making it an exciting eco-tourism
destination for world nature and wildlife travellers.
There are numerous tourist lodges in our area to choose from as well as a large selection of
restaurants and motels and two excellent bed and breakfast venues to keep our visitors in
comfort.
The mainstays of our economy are forestry, railroad and tourism; however, the launch of a
joint project with Bell and Nortel and the Town of Chapleau will see Chapleau become a smart
community with the deployment of leading-edge high speed technology made possible by a wireless
mesh solution deployed throughout town, the first such deployment in Canada in a municipal
setting.
Chapleau is the home base for the Ministry of Natural Resources firefighting headquarters
and their water bombers are stationed at our airport throughout the fire season. We are also
home to the Ministry of Natural Resources Chapleau District Office. When visiting Chapleau you
will find an exciting array of things to do here in addition to the nature attractions. Tours
are available at the sawmill, and our museum houses a vast array of local historical artifacts
and displays.
